Baldur's Gate 3 is Larian Studios' party-based RPG set in the Forgotten Realms. Its official Steam page begins with a mind flayer parasite and a choice about what to do with the power it brings, then promises exploration, dialogue, tactical combat, and a story shaped by the party's decisions. It is a paid PC game. The appeal is not simply that there are many choices, but that character identity, companions, and the way you solve encounters can change the journey. That scope also makes it a much larger commitment than a short action campaign.

Build a character with a role in mind

The store lists 12 classes and 11 races drawn from the Dungeons & Dragons Player's Handbook. You can create your own character, play an Origin hero with a defined background, or use the Dark Urge Origin with its own story mechanics. A new player need not optimize every rule immediately. Choose a broad role you understand—front-line defense, spellcasting, stealth, or support—and learn how that role helps the rest of the group. The class and party combination matters because the same problem may be approached through combat, dialogue, or exploration.

Origin characters give a stronger prewritten perspective; a custom character gives more freedom over identity. Neither choice is universally better. If you value a companion's own history as your point of view, inspect the Origin options before building from scratch. If you want to decide how a new person enters the story, a custom character is a natural start. Avoid reading late-game spoilers merely to find a supposedly perfect opening build.

Party decisions are more than combat math

Larian presents the story as one of trust, temptation, and conflicting goals. Companions have their own interests, so a choice that solves an immediate problem may affect relationships later. Read dialogue options carefully when the outcome matters to you, and accept that a single playthrough cannot show every branch. If you play with friends, discuss whether the group wants to role-play decisions together or give one player final say on important conversations. That conversation prevents the social friction of someone advancing a shared story while others are still exploring.

Steam advertises online parties of up to four and lists co-op, LAN co-op, and cross-platform multiplayer among features. Confirm the current platform and version compatibility before arranging a mixed-device campaign. A cooperative run asks players to agree on pace: one person might want to inspect every book, another to move directly to a quest objective. Set expectations before the first long session.

Read the battlefield before using a turn

As a D&D-based RPG, Baldur's Gate 3 asks you to consider positions, abilities, and resources rather than win by reflex alone. Before committing to an attack, identify which opponent is most dangerous, where your party can stand safely, and whether a spell or environmental interaction changes the odds. A party member's action can be more valuable when it protects an ally or creates an opening than when it deals the highest immediate damage. Review your available abilities after leveling; a new tool is easy to overlook.

Do not spend every limited resource in a minor encounter if you have reason to expect a harder fight ahead. Conversely, saving everything forever can make a difficult battle needlessly frustrating. Learn when the game allows recovery and adapt your plan. The official store emphasizes that exploration, battle, and character bonds all feed the adventure; a tactical success is only one possible piece of a larger decision.

How it differs from other large RPGs

A comparison with ELDEN RING clarifies the choice: both offer fantasy worlds and character builds, but Baldur's Gate 3 centers a party, explicit dialogue decisions, and D&D-style tactical encounters, whereas ELDEN RING emphasizes real-time combat and self-directed exploration. Compare the question you want the game to ask. Do you want to respond to companions and consequences, or to master an enemy pattern and explore an open map? Neither experience is interchangeable just because both are called RPGs.

Steam also identifies single-player as an option, so a full group is not required. A solo player can still manage the party and explore companion stories at their own pace. The scope can be overwhelming if you expect an evening-sized story; consider starting with one clear character concept and learning the systems through play rather than researching every possible outcome first.

Purchase and PC preparation

The Steam listing is the source for its current price, supported languages, editions, and PC requirements. Check available storage and operating-system compatibility before buying, because a large RPG may require substantial space and a capable machine. Check controller and accessibility options against your needs instead of assuming that a listed feature guarantees comfort for every player. We do not claim a measured frame rate or a hands-on evaluation of the current build.

Baldur's Gate 3 is a strong match for players who enjoy reading, deliberating, experimenting with party roles, and living with consequences. It is a weaker fit for someone who wants constant real-time action or a tightly linear route. The best first decision is not a perfect build: it is whether you want to inhabit a character's choices for a long campaign.
