Hollow Knight is Team Cherry's paid, single-player 2D action adventure on Steam. Beneath Dirtmouth, the ruined kingdom of Hallownest opens into caverns, cities and dangerous paths that you can explore in different orders. Its appeal is discovery earned through movement, combat and attention to the environment, not a stream of waypoints that explains every destination. The Steam page lists Windows, macOS and Linux support. If you dislike repeating a difficult fight or finding your own route, the same openness that makes the world memorable may be frustrating.

Exploration is a skill, not a checklist

Team Cherry calls Hallownest a vast interconnected world and says players choose which paths and enemies to face. You will encounter routes that seem possible but are easier after learning a new movement ability. When a path resists progress, remember where it is rather than assuming you missed a hidden instruction. The store names dashing, leaping and spells among the abilities that change what can be reached. That makes revisiting an earlier area part of the design, not a failure to follow the correct order.

Mapping tools matter. The official page mentions buying maps, a compass, quills and pins to understand the kingdom. A useful early habit is to record an unexplored branch before moving into a new area, then return when your movement options improve. This is a navigation principle based on the advertised tools, not a precise route through every room. The game intentionally leaves room for discovery, so an all-spoiler checklist can remove the very reason many players choose it.

Combat asks for timing and adaptation

Hollow Knight's store description emphasizes dodging, dashing and slashing against more than 130 enemies and thirty bosses. An unfamiliar boss is best approached as a pattern to read. Spend an attempt watching where danger begins and ends, then choose a safe moment to attack. More aggressive play can be appropriate once the pattern is understood; repeated attacks without observing the response usually teach less. The official description does not guarantee that a particular charm or spell defeats every boss.

Charms are relics that change abilities and allow a personal loadout. Try to understand what a charm changes in your current obstacle before treating a popular build as mandatory. Spells, speed and movement upgrades provide other ways to revisit a hard encounter. The Hunter's Journal gives a record of enemies, and the Dream Nail opens another layer of character and enemy discovery. Those systems make the kingdom feel more than a set of boss arenas.

Base game, free expansions and Silksong

Team Cherry's Steam description includes several free content additions for Hollow Knight: Hidden Dreams, The Grimm Troupe, Lifeblood and Godmaster. They add bosses, quests, charms, refinements and other challenges. The presence of these named additions in the current store copy means a buyer should distinguish them from unrelated soundtrack or store DLC entries. The separate game Hollow Knight: Silksong is not a required expansion for playing Hallownest; its own page and purchase terms stand alone.

Completing Hollow Knight unlocks Steel Soul Mode, which Team Cherry positions as a greater challenge. Do not make that mode the measure of whether a first playthrough was worthwhile. The ordinary journey already offers branching exploration, hand-animated characters, the Christopher Larkin score and many encounters. If you want a broader set of world-exploration choices, browse Steam adventure games.

System and purchase considerations

Steam sells the base game as a paid title. The current Windows minimum in Valve's product data specifies a 64-bit system, Windows 10 version 21H1 or newer, 4 GB RAM and 9 GB storage. macOS and Linux are also marked supported, but their own current requirements should be read on the live store page rather than inferred from Windows. An older guide may quote a different minimum from an earlier build; check the version shown to your account before purchasing.

The page does not advertise the base game as multiplayer. Do not expect a cooperative campaign simply because you can discuss discoveries with friends. It is best approached as a personal exploration challenge, with optional community discussion after you want hints. YouxiSky has not measured performance or completion time on a particular PC.

Questions about starting Hollow Knight

Do I need to know the entire map first?

No. The publisher describes open path choices and provides mapping tools for discovery. Buying and using maps, the compass, quills and pins can help you remember branches. A route that cannot be crossed yet may become useful after a movement upgrade; there is no need to force every path immediately.

Are the named content packs paid?

The Steam description explicitly calls Hidden Dreams, The Grimm Troupe, Lifeblood and Godmaster free content expansions for Hollow Knight. Separate store items, such as soundtracks, may have different prices. Review the live purchase section if you are comparing editions or additional media.

Is Silksong part of this purchase?

No. Hollow Knight: Silksong has its own Steam product page. The Hollow Knight description's free content additions are not the same as buying that separate game. Check the exact title in your cart before paying.

Editorial take

Hollow Knight's strongest feature is a world that becomes more legible as your movement and understanding improve. Its combat and navigation can be demanding, but the official feature set offers many reasons to revisit an area beyond a collectible count. This is an editorial reading of Team Cherry's store information, not a claim of a completed run or personal score.
