Deep Rock Galactic is Ghost Ship Games' first-person cooperative game about dwarf miners sent into the dangerous caves of Hoxxes IV. A team of one to four explores procedurally generated, destructible terrain, mines resources, completes assignments and survives alien swarms. The paid Steam game can be played alone, but its class tools are designed to complement one another in a group. Its appeal is solving a practical expedition together, not just shooting enemies. A player who dislikes navigation in dark caves or depends on a fixed handcrafted level route should understand that difference before buying.

Four classes, four kinds of problem-solving

The official description names Scout, Gunner, Engineer and Driller. Scout lights the route with a flare gun and moves with a grappling hook. Gunner brings heavy fire and a protective bubble shield. Engineer can establish a perimeter with sentries, mines and a grenade launcher. Driller reshapes ground with handheld drills and uses close-area tools including a flamethrower and explosives. These are not cosmetic class labels: the cave may ask for light, a safe crossing, defended space or a new tunnel, sometimes within the same assignment.

A new four-person team should avoid selecting classes solely for damage. Ask who will reveal a cavern, who can make an awkward ledge reachable and who can protect a short mining stop. A Scout's visibility can make a Gunner's fire more useful; a Driller's tunnel can save a team that would otherwise retreat through a long exposed path. The Steam page does not claim that one composition is required for every mission, so treat complementary roles as a planning principle rather than a rigid rule.

Destructible caves change the route

Ghost Ship says the cave systems are procedurally generated and completely destructible. It lists 11 biomes with different formations, flora and hazards. A team may dig a shortcut, open a firing line or change a choke point instead of accepting the route as fixed. That freedom also creates a navigation risk: a convenient drop may be difficult to climb after the objective is complete. Before committing to a steep descent, consider how the group will return or reach extraction with its current tools.

Mining and survival are connected. Resources serve assignment goals and progression, while noise, distance and separated teammates can make a swarm more dangerous. The official page describes more than 50 enemy types, including creatures that fly, crawl or attack from unexpected directions. It does not give a single tactic that defeats all of them. Keep visibility and escape routes in mind, then adjust equipment and positions when a particular enemy repeatedly disrupts the squad.

A useful first-mission routine

At the start, identify the objective and agree on a simple route marker or regroup callout. When entering a new chamber, light it before everyone spreads out, look for the resources that matter to the assignment, and note a path back. During a swarm, use class tools in a combination: a defensible area, useful sight lines, and a route that does not isolate one miner. Afterward, restore orientation before pushing deeper. These steps are derived from the advertised class and cave mechanics, not from a claim that we completed a particular mission.

Do not measure success only by the number of enemies killed. If the objective is unfinished or teammates cannot reach extraction, a high kill count will not solve the expedition. Conversely, a cautious team can waste time if it ignores a resource it needs. The game's challenge is to balance the job, the cave and survival. Steam's single-player label means you can learn the tools without assembling a four-person group, though coordination is the central selling point of its co-op description.

Seasonal content and paid extras

The Steam listing says six seasons of additional content are part of the base game and describes those seasons as free, without time-limited battle-pass access or rotating fear-of-missing-out shop offers. It identifies optional cosmetic DLC armors as the extras to buy. Read the current store package before purchase, because pricing and available bundles can change; do not mistake a cosmetic pack for a requirement to play the main assignments. The underlying game itself is paid.

For a different four-person co-op emphasis, HELLDIVERS™ 2 revolves around military missions, stratagem call-downs and explicit friendly fire rather than class-led mining in editable caves. If your group likes planning around terrain and traversal as much as combat, Deep Rock Galactic has a clearer fit. If the attraction is wide-area air support in a shared war, the other game offers that different loop. Neither comparison assumes equal pricing or hardware needs.

PC fit and online expectations

Steam lists native Windows support and an online-co-op feature. Its Windows minimum table specifies a 64-bit system, an Intel third-generation i5 or equivalent, 6 GB RAM, a GeForce GTX 660 or Radeon HD 7870, DirectX 11, a broadband connection and 3 GB of storage. Those are published minimums, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate in a crowded cave. Steam also labels the title single-player, but online teamwork requires the connection and other participants. Confirm the current platform and requirement table before buying for a specific computer.

Questions new miners ask

Can I play without three friends?

Yes. Steam lists single-player as well as multiplayer and online co-op, and Ghost Ship describes teams of one to four. That does not make a solo run identical to a four-class squad. Consider solo play a way to learn the objective and a class, while a group lets several traversal and support tools operate at once.

Are the caves the same each run?

No. The developer advertises procedurally generated cave layouts across multiple biomes. Objectives and class abilities provide familiar structure, but do not plan a route around one exact tunnel from a previous mission. Look for a reliable way back to extraction as you explore.

Must I buy each new season?

The official Steam description says the six seasons of additional content included there are free and describes optional paid armor DLC. Check the live package and any later announcements for the exact state when you buy, but do not assume a cosmetic add-on is necessary to access the base game's missions.

Editorial verdict

Deep Rock Galactic's strongest idea is making every class useful for solving the environment, not only for dealing damage. The cave can be shaped, the route must be remembered, and a team has to finish a job under pressure. Its procedural layout and co-op focus may frustrate someone seeking a linear solo shooter, but they give a group reasons to communicate. This is an assessment of the published systems and requirements, not a personal playtest or rating.
