A Sister's Journey is a single-player action-metroidvania by Florian Lackner, released on Steam on October 20, 2026. You guide Violet through a hand-drawn pixel-art world after her sister Rena disappears just before their reunion. Its store page pairs exploration and newly opened routes with run-and-gun combat, precision platforming, and boss fights. The key buying question is how much challenge you want: the developer calls the standard experience demanding but also offers Spiritual Guidance options for players more interested in story and exploration. This is a paid Windows game, not a free-to-play download or a multiplayer adventure.
Violet's search gives exploration a purpose
The premise is personal rather than a generic hunt for treasure. Rena vanishes, dangerous events begin around Violet, and each new route may answer part of that mystery. The Steam description promises characters to meet, secrets to find, and skills and weapons that open more possibilities in a large interconnected world. It does not publish a precise map size, number of regions, or completion time. Treat the phrase “open world” in the listing as a description of exploration rather than a guarantee that every location can be reached from the start.
Metroidvania progression often asks players to return to a blocked path after earning a new movement or combat ability. For this title, the developer specifically says new paths, skills, weapons, and upgrades become available over the journey. A useful habit is to remember an obstacle's location and what prevented progress, then revisit it after a meaningful unlock. That is general navigation advice based on the advertised structure, not a walkthrough of rooms we have completed.
Two fire modes and two upgrade resources
Weapons are a central distinction from a platformer built mainly around melee strikes. Florian Lackner says each weapon has its own mechanics and two special fire modes. The listing does not enumerate every weapon or describe the inputs for every mode, so avoid assuming a particular gun will solve every encounter. Learn what the two modes do in a safe area, then consider whether a fight calls for speed, reach, or a different firing pattern. The developer also highlights dodging and maneuvering around traps, which means damage output is only one part of survival.
Defeated enemies drop Power Crystals that increase a weapon's firepower on the fly. Special Components found in the world are used at a workbench to unlock more of a weapon's potential. Those are different decisions: crystals reward fighting through an immediate area, while components give exploration an equipment goal. The store does not state every upgrade cost, whether crystals persist after death, or the exact order in which weapons can be obtained. Check those rules in the game before planning a rigid build around a description alone.
What the platforming difficulty actually means
The developer explicitly warns about traps, environmental hazards, tough bosses, and a rising death counter. This is not a game to buy solely for its gentle pixel-art appearance. Repeated attempts and accurate movement are part of the advertised design. When an encounter is difficult, separate the problem into enemy pattern, safe movement route, and weapon choice. Changing only the weapon may not help if the obstacle is a timing challenge; repeating the same jump may not help if a new ability is needed elsewhere first.
Spiritual Guidance Mode offers an important alternative. Steam says it can be turned on at any time and provides optional boons to ease battles, traps, or platforming while retaining some challenge. The store also lists adjustable difficulty and save-anytime accessibility features. We cannot verify from the listing exactly which individual assistance switches are available in the final build or whether activating them affects achievements. If you need a specific accessibility behavior, inspect the in-game settings or ask the developer before purchasing.
How it sits beside other Steam games
Hollow Knight: Silksong is a natural point of comparison because both are exploration-heavy action games with demanding traversal. A Sister's Journey puts firearms and two fire modes per weapon at the center of its published combat description, and it clearly advertises an assistance mode that can soften several kinds of obstacle. The comparison is about documented design choices, not a verdict on which game has more content or better controls.
Hades II also rewards learning enemy patterns, but its repeated runs and changing builds are a different progression structure from Violet's search through an interconnected world. If you want a campaign whose map opens as you gain tools, A Sister's Journey is the more relevant premise. If you want the rhythm of separate attempts and evolving run choices, Hades II answers a different desire. We have not conducted a side-by-side play test of difficulty or performance.
Price, PC requirements, and controls
Steam lists A Sister's Journey as a paid base game. The US page displayed an introductory discount ending October 28, 2026 when checked on October 22; the live price, regional tax, and any later sale may differ. It is listed as single-player with full controller support, and the developer recommends a controller. Steam also lists a keyboard-only option, Steam Cloud, and Remote Play on TV. Those labels do not prove that a particular controller model or remote setup will work perfectly; use the current Steam controller details for your hardware.
The published minimum is an Intel Core i3 at 2 GHz or equivalent, 4 GB RAM, a GeForce GTX 660 or equivalent, and 4 GB of available storage. The recommendation rises to an i5 at 2.8 GHz, 8 GB RAM, and a GTX 1070 or equivalent. The developer's minimum OS line still says Windows 7 or higher, but Steam itself warns that its client supports Windows 10 and later from 2024. For a new Steam purchase, plan around a supported Steam client and current Windows compatibility rather than treating that legacy minimum line as a promise of an installable Windows 7 setup. Native macOS and Linux support are not listed, and Steam Deck compatibility is currently unknown.
Questions worth answering before you start
Can I play A Sister's Journey with a friend?
The Steam listing identifies it as a single-player game and does not advertise co-op. Remote Play on TV is a display and input feature, not evidence of a second-player mode. Buy it for Violet's solo journey, not for shared campaign progress. If the developer later adds multiplayer, the official feature list would be the place to confirm that change.
Is the game only for expert platformer players?
No. The default challenge is deliberately demanding, with hazards, bosses, and precision movement, but the official description says Spiritual Guidance can be enabled at any time. It offers help for combat, traps, and platforming. The exact switches and their effect on achievements are not detailed on the store page, so check the in-game menu if that distinction matters to you.
Do Power Crystals and Components do the same thing?
No. According to the developer, Power Crystals from enemies increase firepower during play, while Components found through exploration support weapon improvements at a workbench. The listing does not give a complete upgrade economy or persistence rules. Experiment with each resource in the game rather than assuming they are interchangeable currencies.
Will it work on Windows 7 because the minimum says so?
Do not rely on that line alone. Although the game's requirement panel says Windows 7 or higher, the same Steam page warns that the Steam client only supports Windows 10 and later. A compatible CPU and graphics card cannot overcome a client that no longer supports the operating system. Check the live Steam requirements for your entire setup before buying.
Is there a native macOS, Linux, or verified Steam Deck version?
The current Steam platform icons list Windows, not macOS or Linux, and Steam Deck compatibility is marked unknown. That is not proof the game can never run through a compatibility layer, but it is not an official support promise either. If a non-Windows device is your only way to play, wait for a platform-specific confirmation or a reliable current compatibility report.
Our take on the choice
The clearest reason to consider A Sister's Journey is the combination of Violet's story, interconnected exploration, weapon modes, and adjustable challenge. Players who enjoy discovering routes but struggle with precision timing may appreciate the option to soften several kinds of obstacle. Those seeking co-op, a guaranteed Steam Deck experience, or a low-effort platformer should check their expectations before buying. This is an editorial assessment of the developer's published feature set, not a hands-on review or a scored verdict.
