Wube Software marked Factorio 2.1 stable in its October 23, 2026 Friday Facts #449. This is an important version distinction: the team says 2.1 is a collection of quality-of-life changes, small features and polish, not a release of new planets, enemies or research trees. Players who stayed on 2.0 stable can now review the 2.1 changes without treating an experimental build as final. The biggest practical consequences are in space logistics, circuit control and the way cargo moves through an established factory.

Space platforms can exchange and import more flexibly

The developer says a rocket can carry multiple different items in one launch. That reduces the need to send a full stack of every small component when equipping or repairing a platform. Leaving the “Import from” location blank allows items to come from any location, useful for common supplies such as fuel, ammunition and repair packs. Platforms can also request items from and provide items to other platforms in orbit. These are logistics options, not a reason to remove every existing supply rule without checking where a material should come from.

A platform hub's requests can now be controlled with the circuit network. Wube also describes Radar Universe mode for sending and receiving circuit signals between planets and platforms on a shared channel. If your old design uses many manual settings, decide which request truly needs automation before rebuilding it. Test a small route and check that the signal selects the intended source; a more flexible import rule can also conceal an accidental draw from an expensive or scarce location.

Unloading and platform balance

A new landing-pad unloading bay can be placed in a limited area near the pad, allowing inserters to move arrivals directly into trains, chests, belts or other compatible destinations. Elevated rails can run over cargo bays. For a crowded base, that can change how you design the receiving area, but the restricted placement area means you should measure the available layout before dismantling a working station.

Asteroid damage now depends on remaining asteroid health rather than speed, according to Wube. The platform hub has more health and resistances, and drag is based on mass instead of width. That last point matters for designs built around an unusually narrow “pencil ship.” A 2.0 design may still function, but its trade-offs could change. Compare actual behavior after updating rather than assuming a previously optimal ship remains optimal.

Circuits and Quality are less all-or-nothing

Factorio 2.1 separates circuit reads and writes onto different wire colors, replacing an older self-subtraction workaround. Labs can set current research through circuit conditions; boilers, heat exchangers, mines and pipes gain described circuit interactions. These additions are useful for a precise factory, but they also increase the number of configurations that can be wrong. Make one controlled change at a time and label the signal you expect to see before connecting it to a production-critical line.

Wube says Space Age can now be played without Quality. The Recycler is split into its own mod and Quality becomes a recommended dependency enabled by default. That is not the same as removing Quality from every existing save or saying all mod combinations are safe. Back up a valued factory and read the current migration notes before disabling a system on which its recipes or production lines depend.

What should a returning player do first?

Confirm that Steam has installed the stable 2.1 version, inspect your mods and keep a recoverable save. Then choose one improvement—perhaps mixed rockets or a pad unloader—and test it against a small known flow. The main Factorio page covers the base game; this update is most relevant to players already using the named Space Age systems. More management games appear in Steam simulation, but their save and expansion rules do not transfer here.

Quick answers

Does 2.1 add new planets?

No. Wube explicitly says this release is about quality of life and polish rather than new planets, enemies or research trees. Several of the announced changes affect Space Age logistics, so a player with the expansion may notice more, but that should not be described as a new planet pack.

Is Quality removed?

No. The announcement says Space Age can be played without it, while Quality remains a recommended dependency enabled by default. Changing an existing save's mod configuration should be approached carefully, with a backup and the official migration notes.
