Phantom Blade Zero: Combat and Difficulty Details from Epic’s Preview
Epic’s early hands-on and director interview explain Sha-Chi combat, weapons, checkpoints and difficulty modes before the October 29 launch.

In this guide
Epic contributor Alan Wen played an early chapter of Phantom Blade Zero and interviewed S-Game director Soulframe Liang. His October 9, 2026 preview is first-hand reporting by Epic's writer, not a YouxiSky play test. It describes an action RPG that pairs wuxia choreography with deliberate defense, exploration and several difficulty options. Epic lists an October 29, 2026 store launch; check the live listing for your region and platform before treating that date as a universal release time.
What combat asks you to manage
Heavy attacks and guarding use Sha-Chi, an energy resource. Enemy attacks are color-coded, so the player must choose when to dodge or parry rather than simply hold defense. The preview describes Soul's guard as an active strike against an incoming blade. His first-chapter weapon, Sanguine, makes standard encounters look fast, but the report says careless button-mashing fails against bosses. These are mechanics observed in a preview build, and their final tuning may change.
Exploration is not a quest checklist
The first chapter takes Soul through a plague-struck valley in the Wulin. Epic's writer noticed sword-scarred climbable cliffs and environmental hints for tools not yet acquired, such as grappling points and a bow target. The map is styled as an ink-wash painting and fills in as you explore and rest at bells, rather than revealing every objective at once. Liang says the team prioritized fewer, denser side stories over a map packed with routine errands. That is an intention from the director, not a measured quest count.
Difficulty choices and boss retries
Wayfarer is the more forgiving setting, Pathbreaker is the default, and Hellwalker uses adaptive enemy behavior. The 66 Days mode adds a hard death limit tied to Soul's story countdown, but Liang says it unlocks in New Game Plus. The Epic preview also reports no resource loss on death, bells near bosses and an example where the writer could resume a multi-phase boss at its second phase. Those details make the game distinct from some Soulslikes, but do not mean every fight or checkpoint will be easy.
For launch decisions, watch for final settings and PC requirements. The preview offers meaningful clues about combat and accessibility, but only the shipping build can settle performance and balance.
