New Epic Games Launcher Preview: Features and Linux Limits

Epic’s new launcher preview supports Windows, macOS and selected Linux distributions, but it is a feature-limited test—not Fortnite on Linux.

Epic released a preview of its redesigned Games Launcher on October 14, 2026 for Windows, macOS and, for the first time, supported Linux distributions. The company describes quicker cold starts, smoother navigation and less background system load. These are Epic's claims about its new client, not benchmark results from YouxiSky. More importantly, the first preview intentionally has fewer features than the established launcher and may have beta issues.

What changes in the library and downloads?

A selected game now gets a dedicated page with status, activity, details and play controls. The preview offers grid and list library views, collections, search and filtering as you type, and a customizable top bar. It can connect PC libraries to show owned games together. A consolidated download view reports download, read and write speed, plus active, queued, scheduled and failed work. These are useful navigation changes for large libraries, although the article does not quantify the promised performance improvement.

What carries over if you test it?

Epic says the account, purchased games, installed games, cloud saves and progress are tied to your account and carry into the preview and full release. That does not mean every game or launcher feature behaves identically in beta. Check the preview site's system requirements for your device, install from Epic's own preview link, sign in with the existing account and report issues through the launcher feedback control. Keep important game data and account recovery details current before adopting any beta client.

Linux launcher support is not Fortnite support

The launcher preview supports some Linux distributions, which Epic lists in its separate FAQ. Fortnite on Linux is a future objective, not a launch feature. Epic says it is rebuilding Easy Anti-Cheat support and working with distribution maintainers on security requirements; Fortnite would follow only after sufficient compatibility. Do not read “Linux launcher” as “every Epic title runs on Linux.” Individual game requirements and anti-cheat support still matter.

Epic also says the preview is the beginning of an iterative rollout. Follow its official notes for missing features and fixes instead of treating this first build as the final launcher.
